Suicide Bombers Target Iraqi Police Base In Anbar

Iraqi soldiers take positions in Amriyat al-Fallujah, in Anbar Province, on May 26, 2015.

Iraqi authorities say Islamic State (IS) three simultaneous suicide attacks targeting a police base have killed at least 30 troops in the western Anbar Province.

Police officials said three suicide bombers on June 1 simultaneously drove their Humvees, seized from the Iraq Army, into a police base in the Tharthar area.

The attacks caused a large explosion in an ammunition depot inside the base.

Police said some Shi'ite militiamen were also stationed at the base. More than 60 security-force members were wounded in the attack.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualties.

The attacks come as Iraqi security forces are battling IS militants in Anbar to recapture areas lost to the extremist group, including the provincial capital of Ramadi.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Mission to Iraq said on June 1 that more than 1,031 people were killed and another 1,648 were wounded in violence across the country last month.
