Swedish authorities have officially pronounced World War II hero Raoul Wallenberg dead, seven decades after the disappearance of the diplomat credited with rescuing tens of thousands of Jews from Nazi German forces.

Wallenberg, who was posted as a Swedish diplomat to Nazi-occupied Budapest in July 1944, is credited with helping at least 20,000 Jews in Hungary by issuing them protective passports during the final months of the Holocaust.

He was arrested by Soviet forces in early 1945 and subsequently vanished.

The circumstances and date of his death remain a mystery, but the Swedish Tax Authority says that Wallenberg has officially been pronounced dead, the Swedish newspaper Expressen reported on October 31.

The agency, which registers births and deaths in the country, confirmed the report to the Associated Press.
