Syria Says Air Strikes Fail To Weaken Islamic State

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem has said two months of U.S.-led air strikes have failed to weaken Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria.

In an interview with Lebanese television broadcast on November 28, Moallem said the IS extremist group would not be tackled unless Turkey was forced to tighten border controls and stop foreign fighters crossing into Syria.

IS fighters control large swathes of Syria and neighboring Iraq.

Turkey, which has a 900-kilometer border with Syria, has denied accusations it was supporting Islamist groups to help Syrian rebels topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The United States and its allies have hit IS targets in Syria and Iraq since September, but reports say Western-backed opposition groups in northern Syria have been losing ground to both IS militants and government forces.
