Syrian state television says a top intelligence officer has been killed in fighting with rebels in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour.
The report said General Jameh Jameh was killed "while he was carrying out his mission in defending Syria and its people."
It did not specify when or exactly where Jameh was killed.
Jihadist Internet forums said he died during clashes with jihadist fighters in the provincial capital, the city of Deir el-Zour.
Jameh was the head of the military intelligence directorate in Deir el-Zour, where the regime has been fighting rebels who are seeking to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.
Jameh had been one of Syria's top security officers in Lebanon during Syria's military deployment there from 1976 and 2005.
Kerry To Meet Opposition Leaders In London
Meanwhile, in related news, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is scheduled to meet with Syrian opposition leaders in London on October 22 in an attempt to organize an international peace conference in Geneva.
The conference would be aimed at setting up a transitional government in Syria and ending the country’s civil war.
Kerry also plans to meet in London with ministers of 10 other countries that support opposition forces in Syria.
Syria’s main opposition alliance says it will only join talks if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad leaves power at the end of a transition period.
Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil said in Moscow on October 17 that Syrian peace talks could be held in Geneva on November 23 and 24.
But U.S. and European Union officials say a date for the so-called "Geneva 2" talks has not been confirmed.
