An alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters says it has liberated the northern Syrian town of Manbij from the Islamic State (IS) group.
The Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) are now sweeping Manbij after the departure of a remaining group of IS fighters who had been holed up in the city, said Sharfan Darwish, a spokesman of the SDF-allied Manbij military council.
Darwish also said the SDF freed 2,000 civilians being used as human shields by the militants.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights earlier said some 500 cars had left Manbij carrying IS members and civilians.
It said they were heading northeast toward Jarablus, a town under IS control on the Turkish border.
The SDF, a coalition of U.S.-backed fighters including the Kurdish YPG militia, launched an offensive to retake Manbij two months ago.
The IS group captured the city, located at an intersection of roads south of the Turkish border, two years ago.
