Jailed Tajik opposition lawyer Buzurgmehr Yorov, who is serving a 28-year prison term, went on trial on June 13 on a new charge of fraud. If convicted, Yorov could have an additional 12 years added to his time in prison. The charge stems from a lawsuit filed by an inmate claiming that Yorov took more than $4,000 in exchange for legal assistance to help him get released but in reality did nothing. Yorov denies he received any money from the man. Yorov, 52, was jailed in 2015 on dubious charges, including fraud and insulting an official.
