Analyst Scott Lucas says the lightning-quick fall of Kabul and Afghanistan to Taliban militants will be seen rightly as a foreign policy failure for the United States. But for President Joe Biden, he says, it is a calculated failure that he and his advisers will be hoping the U.S. public will forget about quickly. In Lucas's view, the United States will also now find itself on the sidelines in the country and the region, with Pakistan, China, and other states competing for influence. Lucas is emeritus professor of international politics at the University of Birmingham, an associate with the Clinton Institute at University College Dublin, and founder and editor of EA World View.
