Tehran Denies Missile, Nuclear Cooperation With North Korea

Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad (right) greets North Korea's ceremonial head of state, Kim Yong Nam, in Tehran earlier this year.

Iran denies reports that it is cooperating with North Korea on missile and nuclear development.

Earlier this month, the Japanese media said Iranian experts were recently giving technical support on missile development to North Korea.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on December 11 that the accusations are "completely baseless.”

Mehmanparast admitted that during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s "there was military cooperation,” which was halted.

However the two countries signed a cooperation agreement in science and technology earlier this year.

Moreover, a 2011 UN sanctions report said the two countries were suspected of sharing ballistic-missile technology.

North Korea and Iran are both subject to international sanctions over their nuclear activities.
