EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has urged the United States to uphold the landmark nuclear deal with Iran in discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Brussels.
Tillerson said after talks with Mogherini on December 5 that it was important to "hold Iran fully compliant [with the terms of the nuclear deal] but to recognize [that the Iranians] are carrying out destabilizing actions throughout the region."
Mogherini said that walking away from the 2015 accord "would not put us in a better position to discuss all the rest [of Iran's activities], on the contrary."
U.S. President Donald Trump stated last month that Iran was not upholding "the spirit" of the agreement, which forces Iran to curb its nuclear program in exchange for an easing of international economic sanctions.
Mogherini also said that "negotiations" are needed to resolve the status of Jerusalem, which both Israelis and Palestinians claim as their capital.
Trump is considering recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a move that many Muslim countries in the Middle East have spoken out against.
Arab League head Ahmad Abul-Gheit warned the United States in Cairo on December 5 against making such a move, saying it would be a "dangerous measure that would have repercussions" across the region.
