Traffic Chaos In Belarusian Capital Following Subway Blast

The closure of Minsk's no. 1 subway line has caused commuter chaos.

MINSK -- The bomb explosion in the Minsk subway that killed 12 people and injured dozens more on April 11 is causing major transportation problems in the Belarusian capital, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

The no. 1 subway line has been closed since the blast, causing commuter chaos. The buses intended to provide an alternative to the no. 1 line are overcrowded.

Buses have to wait much longer at every bus stop to let passengers on and off as they are stuffed with people.

Many Minsk residents preferred to walk to work from the central Independence Square as the buses were too slow and there was often no space inside them for new passengers.

Minsk authorities said today they had arrested two Belarusian citizens who confessed to the bombing as well as to unsolved bombings in 2005 and 2008.
