U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and ordered the U.S. State Department to begin preparations for a new embassy there. In a speech from the White House on December 6, Trump said that the decision was long overdue, but he added that "the United States remains deeply committed to helping facilitate a peace agreement" between Israelis and Palestinians, who have long contested the status of Jerusalem.
