U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit the sites of two tragedies -- the hurricane-ravaged island of Puerto Rico and the city of Las Vegas, where at least 59 people were killed in the largest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
Trump will make his first visit to Puerto Rico on October 3, two weeks after Hurricane Maria blasted through the U.S. territory.
Trump has faced increasing criticism for his handling of the disaster on the island, where the vast majority of residents are still without power and phone service and are short of food, water, and fuel.
Trump engaged in a war of words with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, who criticized what she called the federal government’s slow response to the disaster.
Trump responded on Twitter by accusing the mayor of "poor leadership."
It is unclear whether the two will meet during the presidential visit.
The White House said Cruz “has been invited to participate in the events tomorrow, and we hope those conversations will happen and that we can all work together to move forward."
Trump also accused many of his critics on the island of being “politically motivated ingrates” who “want everything to be done for them.”
After spending “significant time” in Puerto Rico, Trump is scheduled to travel on October 4 to Las Vegas, site of the mass shooting that left at least 59 people dead and 527 others injured.
Trump called the mass shooting "an act of pure evil" that had brought the country together in "sadness, shock, and grief" and praised the efforts of emergency-response workers.
The motive of the shooter -- who opened fire on the crowd at an outdoor country music festival from a 32nd-floor hotel-room window late on October 1 -- remains a mystery.
