Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Saudi Arabia has the responsibility to prove its claim that a missing Saudi journalist left the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.
Journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor, has been missing since visiting the Saudi Consulate on October 2 to complete paperwork needed to marry his Turkish fiancee.
Turkish officials have said the authorities believe Khashoggi was killed at the consulate, allegations denied by Saudi Arabia, which says the journalist left the building.
A former newspaper editor, Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia last year saying he feared retribution for his growing criticism of Saudi policy in the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent.
Speaking during a visit to Hungary, Erdogan said the Saudis "cannot save themselves by saying he left."
"They have lots of cameras...if he'd left the place, why don't they prove it?" Erdogan said at a joint press conference in Budapest with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. "We're not going to let it go."
Erdogan said Turkish police, intelligence, and judiciary officials were investigating.
He said it was his "political and humanitarian duty" to solve the case.
