Turkish media reports say the military's chiefs of staff have resigned over tensions with the Islamic-rooted government.

Reports said the head of the Turkish armed forces, General Isik Kosaner, along with the heads of the ground, naval, and air forces have resigned.

The reason for their resignations was not immediately clear. Tensions between the military and the government of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan have been high in recent years, and the Supreme Military Council was due to hold a major meeting next week.

The government and military leaders were seeking a compromise deal over several key appointments during next week's gathering.
