U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has said it is "sad" that his Democratic rival in the November election, Hillary Clinton, is joining efforts to force recounts of votes in up to three crucial states.

Trump's remarks, tweeted on November 27, came a day after Clinton's campaign said it would take part in a recount of election votes in the U.S. state of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin's election board on November 25 approved the recount requested by Green Party candidate Jill Stein, who cited "statistical anomalies" in Wisconsin.

Stein is also seeking recounts in the states of Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Earlier, Trump had described Stein's efforts to recount the vote as a "scam."

Clinton leads the national popular vote by about two million votes.

But in the Electoral College that decides who will be the president, Trump won 290 electoral votes compared to Clinton's 232 -- not counting the electoral votes from the state of Michigan.

On November 27, Trump was leading Michigan's popular vote by 11,000 – with the results still awaiting state certification on November 28.

If recounts show that Clinton won in all three states -- Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania -- it could tip the Electoral College vote in her favor.
