Washington says it has received a formal extradition request from Turkey for exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner said on August 23 that the United States is considering the merits of the request.
Turkey's president has blamed the July 15 coup attempt in that country on Gulen, who lives in Pennsylvania. Gulen has denied any connection to the coup plot.
However, Toner saidthe extradition request is unrelated to the failed coup. He declined to provide any details.
Up to now, the United States has been studying information that Turkey has provided purporting to show Gulen's wrongdoing.
