U.K. Lawmaker Killed In Shooting Attack, EU Referendum Campaigns Suspended

Labour deputy Jo Cox was 41 years of age

A British Labour lawmaker has died after suffering serious injuries in an attack.

Jo Cox, 41, was shot and stabbed near the city of Leeds in West Yorkshire, north of London.

A 77-year-old man also suffered slight injuries.

Police said a 52-year-old man was arrested after the incident and that they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.

Clarke Rothwell, who runs a nearby cafe, told the BBC that he believed Cox had been shot and stabbed multiple times.

"The third time he got close proximity [the attacker] shot her around the head area," he said.

"In the meantime he was stabbing her as well,” the witness added. β€œHe was stabbing her with his knife."

The attack comes a week before Britons have been called upon to vote in a referendum and decide whether Britain remains part of the European Union.

Both the Leave and Remain camps suspended campaigning in light of the attack.
