Ukrainian President Appoints New Justice Minister

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has signed orders replacing the country's justice minister.

Yanukovych's July 4 decree names Olena Lukash to replace Oleksandr Lavrynovych, who was recently elected as a member of the Supreme Council of Justice of Ukraine.

Lukash’s appointment comes as the country’s justice system is under scrutiny from Ukrainians following the brutal rape of a woman in the southern city of Mykolayiv last week.

Three suspects were apprehended, two of whom were members of the local police force.

One of those policemen was initially released until crowds attacked a local police station demanding the suspect be placed in detention.
