Russian forces have been stepping up strikes on Kharkiv city, Ukraine's second-largest urban center. The city had been suffering from blackouts and power shortages before a recent air attack took out the Kharkiv TV tower. In the broader Kharkiv region, isolated residents have little contact with the world beyond their villages, many of which were occupied by Russian troops in the early days of the invasion. Their only access to essential medical supplies comes via a mobile pharmacy service that travels to remote areas where medical facilities have been destroyed by war.
