Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemilev unveiled a memorial to honor Crimean Tatar victims of genocide in Kyiv's Peace Park on September 11. Zelenskiy called the memorial "a symbol of our unity and willingness to restore justice...that also reminds us of three tragic stages in the history of Crimean Tatars -- the annexation of Crimea by the Russian empire in 1783, the deportation of Crimean Tatars (by the Soviets to Central Asia) in 1944, and the occupation in 2014."
