Russian Veto Threat Delays UN Srebrenica Vote

A UN Security Council vote on a British-drafted resolution that aims to mark 20 years since the Srebrenica massacre has been postponed until July 8.

Diplomats said the vote, originally scheduled for July 7, was delayed and then postponed as U.S., British, and Russian diplomats discussed differences on the draft.

The draft text said "acceptance of the tragic events at Srebrenica as genocide is a prerequisite for reconciliation" and condemns genocide denial.

Bosnian Serb leaders refuse to recognize the killing of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys near Srebrenica in July 1995 as genocide.

Russia, which supported Bosnian Serbs and Serbia during the Balkan wars, has described the resolution as “divisive” and focused just “on part of the conflict.”

Serbia has asked Russia to veto the resolution.

Bosnia-Herzegovina is preparing for somber national commemorations of the Srebrenica massacre on July 11.
