UN figures released today show global food prices reached a record high in January, above 2008 peaks when rising food prices sparked riots in several countries.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization said that its Food Price Index was the highest since records began in 1990.
The index measures monthly price changes for a food basket composed of cereals, oilseeds, dairy, meat, and sugar. In January, it averaged 230.7 points, compared to 224.1 in June 2008.
