U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has expressed confidence in the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, despite an investigation into possibly "inappropriate" communications.
General John Allen is under scrutiny for e-mails with a Florida woman linked to a sex scandal that engulfed David Petraeus and forced his resignation as CIA director.
Speaking in Australia, Panetta cautioned against jumping to early conclusions about the allegations against General Allen.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appeared with Panetta at a news conference on November 14.
She declined to comment except to suggest the situation has not harmed the U.S. mission in Afghanistan.
On November 13, Panetta announced that Allen's nomination to become NATO’s supreme allied commander in Europe had been put on hold.
Allen will now return to Afghanistan and remain in charge of international forces there until the probe in over.
