Reports say former U.S. President George H.W. Bush is being treated at a hospital in Houston, Texas.

Houston Methodist Hospital spokeswoman Stephanie Asin confirmed the information.

No other details were immediately available from the hospital.

U.S. television station NBC News reports that Bush, who is 88, is being treated for bronchitis out of "an abundance of caution."

The "Houston Chronicle" reported on November 29 that Bush has a chronic cough and that his condition is not life-threatening.

A spokesman for Bush could not immediately be reached for comment.

Bush, a Republican, was the 41st president of the United States and was in office from 1989-93, during the collapse of communism and its immediate aftermath.

He previously served as President Ronald Reagan's vice president from 1981-89.
