Former U.S. presidents from opposing parties -- George Bush and Barack Obama -- united in homage to the late senator and war hero John McCain in a televised farewell ceremony at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. on September 1. Speakers, including McCain’s daughter Meghan, remembered the former prisoner of war for his patriotism, values and principles, courage to stand up to oppression, totalitarianism, and America’s adversaries around the world as well as ability to reassure allies, but also rebuked the politics of division associated with incumbent President Donald Trump whom McCain had chosen not to invite to his own funeral.
