About 20 percent of the world's oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

The "USS Porter," a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, suffered minor damage in a collision with an oil tanker on August 12 near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a Navy statement, no one on either ship was injured, and the cause of collision is under investigation.

The "Porter" was able to continue sailing without assistance.

About 20 percent of the world's oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean.

Iran has occasionally threatened to block the strait in response to U.S. and international sanctions against Tehran's nuclear program.
