U.S. Officials: Iranian Ships Moving Away From Yemen

U.S. officials say Iranian ships suspected of carrying weapons for Shi’ite Huthi rebels are moving away from Yemen.

The unidentified officials were quoted as saying on April 23 that the nine-ship convoy had turned around and headed north, away from the war-torn country.

They said the United States would continue to monitor to see if the ships' course continued.

On April 21, President Barack Obama said the U.S. government had warned Iran against delivering weapons to Yemen that could be used to threaten shipping traffic in region.

Earlier this week, the White House said aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt was heading to waters off the coast of Yemen, joining other U.S. warships, to insure freedom of navigation and commerce.

The UN Security Council has imposed an arms embargo on the Huthi-led rebels in Yemen.
