Afghan police say Taliban militants armed with guns and explosives attacked a NATO-run civilian reconstruction base in the southern city of Kandahar today.
Police said "three to four" militants fired on the provincial reconstruction team (PRT) base.
A police spokesman said security forces entered the three-story building and killed the attackers four hours after the firing began.
PRTs are joint military and civilian initiatives carrying out development and reconstruction work in Afghan provinces.
Two explosives-laden motorbikes and one minivan which had been left near the compound were safely detonated by the police.
Reports say a security meeting attended by the Kandahar provincial governor, security officials, and commanders from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force had been taking place at the PRT base at the time, but none of those present was hurt.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Kandahar is the birthplace of the Taliban, and their current stronghold in the country.
