WASHINGTON -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said the United States is "deeply concerned" over the treatment of jailed former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
Tymoshenko says she has been beaten by prison guards in the Kharkiv prison where she is serving a controversial seven-year sentence for abuse of office.
Her supporters have released pictures of bruises on Tymoshenko's abdomen that they said backed her claims.
Tymoshenko has also declared a hunger strike.
Clinton said in a statement on May 1 that the photos "further call into question the conditions of her confinement."
Clinton also asked that the former prime minister be given immediate medical treatment and that the U.S. ambassador be granted access to her.
Prosecutors on April said they believed the bruises developed after Tymoshenko "bumped into a blunt hard object" such as a bed post.
