The United States has imposed new sanctions against Iran in a bid to punish that country over its nuclear and missile programs and backing for the Lebanese militant group Hizbollah.
The Treasury Department said it was adding five more Iranian companies to the U.S. financial blacklist -- including two banks, an insurance company, a freight forwarder, and a state-owned shipper, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.
The sanctions bar the firms, which are all linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, from the U.S. financial system and freeze any assets they may have in U.S. jurisdictions.
The U.S. measures follow the imposition of new sanctions on Iran earlier this year by the United Nations Security Council over Iran's nuclear activities.
Iran denies allegations its nuclear program is aimed toward the potential development of nuclear weapons.
