A Syrian-born, naturalized U.S. citizen has been indicted on charges of spying on U.S. activists opposed to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
According to an indictment unsealed on October 12, Mohamad Soueid of Leesburg, Virginia, was arrested on October 11 and charged with conspiring to act in the United States as an agent of a foreign government.
Soueid was scheduled to make an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Alexandria on October 12.
According to the indictment, Soueid sent 20 video recordings between April and June to Syria's intelligence agency.
The videos show anti-Assad protests in the United States.
The indictment also alleges that Soueid traveled to Syria in June to personally meet with Assad.
The Syrian Embassy in Washington has issued a statement denying all charges.
