The United States says it has suspended a plan to send food aid to North Korea because of Pyongyang's decision to launch a rocket next month.
Peter Lavoy, the acting assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific affairs, told members of Congress on March 28 that North Korea's decision to go ahead with the launch violated a missile-test-moratorium agreement.
As a result, Lavoy said, U.S. officials no longer think the aid will be distributed properly.
Under the deal signed in February, North Korea agreed to a partial freeze of nuclear activities and the missile-test moratorium in return for food aid intended for children and pregnant women.
