Ten close associates of the Uzbek president’s eldest daughter, Gulnara Karimova, are under criminal investigation.
The Uzbek Prosecutor-General's Office announced on February 19 that Rustam Madumarov, known as Karimova’s boyfriend, and her close business associates Gayane Avakian and Yekaterina Klyuyeva are being investigated for their alleged involvement into forgery, illegal business activities, money laundering, tax evasion, and the illegal export of hard currency in large amounts.
Media reports said earlier that Karimova's apartment in Tashkent had been searched by security forces on February 17 and that her associates had been detained.
Karimova has been linked with ongoing money-laundering investigations in Sweden and Switzerland where Avakiyan and other three alleged Karimova’s associates are being investigated.
In Uzbekistan, several of her media outlets have been taken off the air and her Terra Group media holding company is being investigated for bribe-taking.
