The Supreme Court of Uzbekistan said on August 3 that 38 men have been convicted of polygamy in the Central Asian nation over the last five years. Under Uzbek law, those convicted can be punished by a fine of 330,000 soms ($28), forced labor for up to three years, a restriction of freedom for one to three years, or imprisonment for up to three years. The problem of polygamy in Uzbekistan has been the subject of debate for many years. While it is illegal, thousands of men in Uzbekistan are said to be taking multiple wives in a growing trend.
