Traffic lights showing pictograms of gay, lesbian, and heterosexual couples with hearts are being set up in the Austrian capital ahead of next week's 60th Eurovision Song Contest.
Vienna’s authorities say the new lights will replace the current pictograms of single people at dozens of crosswalks in the center of the city.
Officials say the revamped signals are signs of Vienna's tolerance. The city has been actively promoting itself as a gay-friendly destination ahead of the Eurovision contest.
The installations are also aimed at raising traffic awareness. The city will test whether the new pictograms will make pedestrians pay attention to red lights and reduce jaywalking.
Austria is among the 40 nations taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest.
After the semifinals on May 19 and 21, the remaining countries will face off in the grand finale on May 23.
