Republican lawmaker Steve Scalise, one of five people shot by a gunman during practice for a charity baseball game, remains in critical condition following surgery, the hospital treating him said.
The gunman, who opened fire on a baseball field in a Washington., D.C. suburb on June 14, was shot and killed.
Steve Scalise, a congressman from Louisiana who is the majority whip -- the third most senior Republican member of the House of Representatives -- was shot in the hip in the June 14 attack in Alexandria, Virginia.
Scalise underwent surgery at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, which said in a tweet that the congressman "was critically injured and remains in critical condition." Officials said the other wounded did not have life-threatening injuries.
The gunman, named by the police as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, was shot and killed. Hodgkinson also wounded two Capitol Police officers and a member of Texas Congressman Roger Williams' staff.
"Many lives would've been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman, despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault," President Donald Trump said in a statement broadcast from the White House.

The assault occurred at around 6:30 am local time as some 25 senators and congressmen were at the practice as they prepared for a charity baseball game scheduled for June 15.
Republican Senator Jeff Flake told reporters at the scene that at least 50 shots rang out as the gunman and the lawmakers' security detail exchanged fire.

Chief Michael Brown told reporters that Alexandria police responded within three minutes of being called and that the suspect had initially been taken into custody after being wounded by police.
Tim Slater, a special agent in charge of the FBI's Washington field office, told reporters that it was too early to tell if the shooting was a targeted attack.
However, South Carolina Republican Congressman Jeff Duncan told CNBC that a man asked him whether the players on the field were Democrats or Republicans.
Representative Ron Desantis, a Republican from Florida who was with Duncan, was also quoted by CNBC as saying that the pair saw pictures of Hodgkinson and believe it was the same person.
Hodgkinson was a volunteer for Senator Bernie Sanders during his run to become the Democratic presidential nominee for last year’s election.
"I am sickened by this despicable act," Sanders said in a statement after learning of the connection to his campaign.
"I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms. Real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values," he added.
