Officials in Russia's northwestern region of Karelia said on July 29 that one person died and several are missing after a temporary dam burst on the White Sea-Baltic Canal (Belomorkanal). Unconfirmed reports said the deluge of water washed away three houses in a nearby village. Constructed by forced labor of gulag inmates, Belomorkanal is one of Russia's major shipping canals and connects the Arctic Ocean's White Sea with the Onega Lake, which is further connected to the Baltic Sea. It began operation in August 1933. The dam that broke was temporarily built as the canal's gateways have been under repair since 2022.
