Almaty's Olympic Bid

The students' village that is being built for the 2017 Winter Universiade is expected to be used for hosting athletes during the 2022 Winter Olympics if Almaty is chosen. 

Some 4,000 athletes and personnel from the countries participating in the 2017 Universiade will be accommodated in the village. 

A new ice-hockey stadium is being built in Almaty's Alatau District. The stadium will be able to hold 12,000 spectators.

If all goes to plan, the construction of the new ice-hockey stadium will be finished by November 2016.

Another new ice stadium with a projected capacity of up to 3,000 spectators is also being built in Almaty's Medeu District. The facility will host skating and curling competitions.

If Almaty is selected to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, skiing and biathlon contests will held at the Aqbulaq sports complex, which was built for the 2011 Asia Games.
