The head of state-owned Russian Railways says he filed a defamation lawsuit against The New York Times on January 26 in a Moscow court.
Railways President Vladimir Yakunin's lawyer, Aleksei Melnikov, said his client wants no financial compensation but objects to what was written about him in an article published on April 27.
The article by White House correspondent Peter Baker quoted a cable released by WikiLeaks saying that Yakunin "has made sizable cash payments to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin."
The New York Times spokeswoman, Eileen Murphy, told RFE/RL that the newspaper had not been served any legal papers in relation to the lawsuit and the newspaper's legal department had not heard from Yakunin or his attorney about their complaint.
The first hearing on the lawsuit is to be held on February 19 in Moscow's Presensky court.
