Two young Yazidi activists, Nadia Murad Basee and Lamiya Aji Bashar, have won the 2016 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, awarded by the European Parliament. Both were captured and enslaved by Islamic State militants in Iraq, and now advocate for women's and minority rights. In September, Murad Basee addressed the UN, demanding action to help end extremist violence. In May, Aji Bashar spoke to reporters about her escape from the militants. (AP)
