Yemen's PM Resigns As Shi'ite Rebels Seize Government Buildings

Reports from Yemen say Prime Minister Muhammad Basindawa has resigned after Shi'ite rebels seized key government buildings -- the fourth day fighting has raged in the capital, Sanaa.

Shi'ite Huthi rebels were intensifying attacks on government buildings and advancing through the capital rapidly on September 21, despite the announcement of a United Nations-brokered peace agreement meant to be signed later in the day.

The rebels have seized the state radio and television headquarters.

Heavy fighting also was reported near the headquarters of Yemen's disbanded First Armored Division, with some reports saying the facility was seized by the rebels.

Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansur Hadi has hinted that Shi'ite-dominated Iran supports the Huthi rebels, who have battled government troops and loyalist tribes for years.

Fighting dramatically escalated on September 18 in Sanaa after clashes between Shi'ite demonstrators and security forces in Sanaa.
