Yemen Police Deny Fatal Shootings

Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh has ignored repeated calls for his resignation.

The Yemeni Interior Ministry has denied reports that police opened fire during an antigovernment protest in the capital Sana'a, killing at least six people.

Activists say the shooting occurred on October 15 as police tried to disperse hundreds of thousands of opponents of President Ali Abdullah Saleh who were attempting to march on loyalist areas of the city center from their stronghold in Change Square.

Activists had called on protesters to march in a bid to bring to a head 10 months of increasingly bloody demonstrations against Saleh's 33-year rule in Sanaa.

The veteran president has refused to step down despite calls for his departure from both Western governments and Yemen's Gulf neighbors.
