Young Kyrgyz Demand Jobs In Government

BISHKEK -- Leaders of Kyrgyz youth organizations have accused the government of failing to fulfill its promise to give young specialists and professionals jobs in government bodies and institutions, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Following the ouster of President Kurmanbek Bakiev on April 7, the interim government adopted a special program to increase the number of young people in state and municipal bodies.

The government allocated some $340,000 for special training programs in which some 1,700 young men and women participated.

But youth activists at a press conference on December 22 said only 1 percent of those who received such training have subsequently been hired by state and municipal bodies.

The youth activists said they have sent open letters to President Roza Otunbaeva and parliament speaker Akmatbek Keldibekov asking for their help in resolving the issue.
