Vitaliy Portnikov

Vitaliy Portnikov has been a contributor to RFE/RL since 1990, working with the Ukrainian and Russian services. He currently provides analysis of current affairs on the weekly Ukrainian Service video show Dialogues With Portnikov and hosts the weekly Russian Service video show Roads To Liberty. A prominent Ukrainian journalist and publicist, he also works with the independent Espreso TV. Portnikov has written several books and was awarded Ukraine’s Taras Shevchenko prize in 2023.

The current visit by Moscow Patriarch Kirill have probably evoked greater interest than any previous visit to Ukraine by a head of the Russian Orthodox Church. This is not simply because it's mid-summer and there is so little other news. It has become evident that the new patriarch adheres to a clear political line with regard to Ukraine, one that entails regular and lengthy visits -- and possibly even dividing his time between Moscow and Kyiv.

Each year during his presidency, Vladimir Putin answered questions put to him by viewers of federal television, questions phoned in by viewers along with some posed by people who gathered at specially prepared regional centers. But appearing as the leader is not without its risks, especially in times like these, and especially when he is no longer president.
