Tragedy Unfolds In Kyrgyzstan

More than 100 people have been confirmed dead, but the death toll is expected to rise and well over 1,000 people have been injured in Kyrgyzstan since ethnically charged clashes began on June 10 in and around the southern city of Osh. Tens of thousands of ethnic Uzbeks are said to have fled homes in search of safety.

Iranian-American Artist Mona Shomali

Mona Shomali, 31, was in her mother's womb when she fled Iran. Her mother, a member of Iran's persecuted minority Bah'ai faith, raised her daughter in Los Angleles -- home to the largest Iranian Diaspora community. Her father, who taught Iranian Studies at Stanford University, raised his daughter with a keen awareness of her country's history and culture. Shomali walks RFE/RL through her painting collection "Naked Folklore."
