Russian NGO Under Scrutiny
Russian prosecutors in Moscow have opened a legal case against the nongovernmental organization Public Verdict, which provides legal assistance to victims of police abuse. The NGO is being investigated for apparently failing to register as a "foreign agent." Under recently enacted legislation, an organization is required to register as a "foreign agent" if it receives money from foreign sources and engages in political activity.
