Russian Security Forces Raid Crimean Tatar Assembly
Russian security forces raided the Crimean Tatar assembly, the Mejlis, in Simferopol on September 16. RFE/RL's correspondent reported that 10 police officers and six armed, masked men in military uniforms had surrounded the Mejlis and were not letting anyone enter or leave the building. Most of the Crimean Tatar minority opposed Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in March, and many boycotted local elections on September 14. (RFE/RL)
