Khyber Girls' School Reopens
In Pakistan, a secondary school for girls was reopened in the Khyber tribal district’s Bara area after being closed for more than six years due to threats from Islamic militants. Thousands of people fled the area following the launch of a government military operation against the militants in 2009. Officials told RFE/RL the militants have now been expelled from the area and some 22,000 families have returned to their homes.
