Afghan Pop Star Aryana Sayeed To Perform, Despite Threats
Afghan pop star Aryana Sayeed says she will perform in a charity concert in Kabul, despite threats from conservative religious groups opposed to women singing in public. In an interview with RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan on August 17, Sayeed -- who is a judge on Afghanistan's version of the TV talent competition "The Voice" -- said that most Afghans supported her performing, and that it was their "absolute right" to enjoy themselves. Sayeed plans to donate money from the show on August 19 to families displaced by last week's militant attack on the village of Mirza Olang in northern Afghanistan, which killed at least 62 people. Taliban and Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for the attack. (RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan)
