A prominent opposition politician from the southern city of Astrakhan, Oleg Shein, is in a Moscow hospital after being stabbed, though doctors say his life is not threatened.
Interior Affairs Directorate officials say Shein and a 23-year-old associate were rushed to the hospital after they were attacked overnight. A woman suspected in the assault has been apprehended. No motive is known.
In March last year, Shein, representing the "A Just Russia" party, came in second in Astrakhan's mayoral election, winning some 30 percent of the vote. The ruling United Russia party's candidate, Mikhail Stolyarov, was declared the winner.
Last week, Shein announced plans to run in Astrakhan's early mayoral election after Stolyarov was detained on November 13 on corruption charges.
